6 Decades of Design

Breaking down conventionalism and bringing brand identity strength, longevity and meaning in our world of logo design.

Have you heard of Chermayeff and Greismar?

Ivan Chermayeff and Tom Greismar, designing for 60 years with an inspired energy, creating iconic trademark logos. Chermayeff and Greismar’s particular way of designing was before the idea of what we refer to today as “branding”.

To inspire forward-thinking identity, bringing meaning and power with their now legendary, timeless logo designs. The thought process of investigation and research, identifying the basic principles creating a true vision of a brand.

Their mantra of a brand is that it should speak volumes without to many visible explanatory words, being key. A simple, clear logo, stands heads and shoulders above the rest, on the face of it perhaps its fairly plain but it has much more in the background which is considered.

Chermayeff and Greismar have a vast inspirational portfolio of strong, dominant, simple, clean-cut designs, which are there, bench-marking American life-style: NBC, Mobil, National Geographic, Pan American World Airways, amongst a handful of their recognisable work, all of which are reliable, in the background, like a good parent, and have laid impression upon many of us over the years.

We thank-you for 60 years of logo designs that changed convention and outlook to the world, bringing inspired designs to the forefront. Being part of the 1960’s design boom which broke down convention of traditionalism. During the onset of a time of unprecedented change. Leaving behind the 1950’s war years and moving forward, for a decade in which design and fresh-thinking creativity were unleashed in a force that moved all areas of society.  Did Yale University ever have any inkling? Two of their graduates would pave the way forward as to how Corporate America should approach their overall impression upon society, regardless of class, race, religion.

The duo began a New York-based branding and graphic design firm in 1957 (and eventually in 2006 expanded the duo by bringing onboard designer Sagi Haviv who became the company’s third partner.)

Sadly Chermayeff died on December 3, 2017 at the age of 85.

Ivan Chermayeff and Thomas Geismar are a true legacy to our world of design, vision and culture. A testament of vision and creativity.

“Some things in life come and go, but the Chermayeff & Geismar logos are eternal.”- Issac Mizrahi.

Principles of identity and design? Ivan and Thomas nailed it!
