Burton Small Business Conference at the Pirelli Stadium

On Wednesday 12th September, Davies + Scothorn were proud to sponsor the Burton Small Business Conference held at the Pirelli Stadium. We attended the event, opened by the town mayor, and spoke with different business people from our stand, informing people about what we do and creating new business connections.

The morning consisted of eight talks from various business owners and a talk from the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Growth Hub about how you can attain funding for your business. It was really beneficial to hear some inspiring stories and to take part in a number of informative workshops.

Speakers included Cheryl Morris, who delivered a great talk in which she covered the benefits of PR and best practice in communications for small businesses. Additionally, Chris Else, from Else Solicitors, spoke of his law career and the development of his company. Interestingly, Chris made the point that Burton-on-Trent was a great location for him to start up his business back in 2003, owing to the fact that Burton is a good central hub for business, with more headquarters for big corporations than in Birmingham. Equally, Tilly Bancroft from Red Door Studios delivered a workshop on videography in which she coached us on how to achieve the best possible results when creating any kind of commercial video.

During the course of the morning, we also heard some inspirational local success stories. Lauren Dorling spoke about how she spotted a gap in the market and decided to set up the personalised sock company Solesmith in 2014. The production line was based out of her garden shed, but now, having gone from strength to strength, Solesmith have their own warehouse and customers all over the world. As well as selling their products independently they also sell through notonthehighstreet.com in the UK and hardtofind.com in Australia. Lastly, Vanessa Davies, co-founder of Calm Yoga Studios, gave an enthusing talk on how to overcome stress and fear, in both business and your personal life. Calm Yoga has experienced great success over the last year, so much so that they now have over 3,200 clients and hold 55 classes a week.

The conference ended with a lovely lunch, allowing the attendees of the conference to network with each other and visit the stands of various businesses around the room. The event provided a great opportunity to build new business relationships and to strengthen our local network.
