My experience working at Davies + Scothorn

As a recent graduate of Nottingham Trent University, I was struggling to get my foot in the door of the very competitive marketing industry. It can be quite difficult for graduates to figure out what they want to do next, so I was searching for work experience that would allow me to participate in a variety of tasks, but also allow me to create my own portfolio. I approached many different agencies looking for work experience and was rejected by all, until I was put into contact with Davies Scothorn through a family friend.

Almost immediately I was brought in for a quick informal meeting, which allowed me to meet everyone and discuss what I wanted from the internship and what I would be doing for their company. From the first day I was able to get stuck in, as I began writing a blog for their website, focused on the marketing techniques businesses can adopt to promote their brand on social media. It was a great learning curve as I was able to research marketing in depth, and enabled me to see my writing skills in action, as well as start building my own portfolio of work. I quickly realised that content creation was what I wanted to do, so I created blogs and some writing for clients.

Sitting in on client meetings also helped me to understand how an agency works, as it was extremely informative watching how my colleagues dealt with their clients, and what work they offered to do for them.

I also accompanied Sophie on a trip to the site of a construction company where we planned shots and organised a day of shooting in preparation to film a corporate video for the company. This not only gave me an insight to how video content is created and produced, but also the different aspects they have to take into account when planning the filming day, such as weather conditions, lighting and type of camera would be most appropriate for each shot. This meant for a well-rounded experience, which helped me gain a deeper insight into the range of services an agency can offer.

Davies + Scothorn’s office is a lovely open plan work place, with colourful posters and funny ornaments. I looked forward to coming into work every morning due to the informal nature of the office; we would often sit and eat lunch together whilst watching Gavin and Stacey and there was lots of friendly banter.

Working for Davies + Scothorn for 4 weeks has helped me immensely with my job search, as I managed to get two job offers before my time with them was up! Working here has been a great start to my 2019, as I have met some amazingly hardworking people who have helped me find my way into a seriously competitive industry. It has been by far my favourite experience in the work place, and I wish everyone at the company luck in their endeavours and hope to work with them again at some point in the future.
